Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) led his family across Central Asia between 1925 and 1928, held five months in tents on the Tibetan plateau while they waited for permission to travel on. He designed The Rite of Spring for Stravinsky, founded the Master Institute of United Arts in Manhattan, and gave his name to the Roerich Pact, the first international treaty to protect cultural treasure in wartime. He left some 7,000 paintings. In India he is held as a national figure, and New York keeps a museum in his name.
